Characteristics: Ringed by small lakeside camps and homes
Meaning: “Waters much dried away”

Skaneateles

Length: 15 miles
Depth: 315 feet
Elevation: 868 feet
Characteristics: Cold, clean water, shale base, steep hillsides at southern end; large homes and mansions hug northern shores
Meaning: “Long Lake”
Largest town: Skaneateles

Owasco

Length: 11 miles
Depth: 177 feet
Elevation: 710 feet
Characteristics: More laid back than its neighbor Skaneateles
Meaning: “Floating bridge”or “Crossing place”
Largest town: Auburn

Cayuga

Length: 40 miles
Depth: 435 feet
Elevation: 382 feet
Characteristics: Long and wide, can get very rough on windy days; large stretches of open rolling land between towns; many vineyards
Meaning: “Boat Landing”
Largest town: Ithaca

Seneca

Length: 36 miles

Elevation: 444 feet
Characteristics: Deepest of the Finger Lakes and second deepest in the country; ringed by hills and vineyards
Meaning: “Place of the stone”
Largest town: Geneva

Keuka

Characteristics: Branches into a Y shape; many vineyards
Meaning: “Canoe landing”
Largest town: Penn Yan

Canandaigua

Characteristics: Mostly lined by homes
Meaning: “Chosen Spot”

Honeoye

Canadice

Characteristics: Highest elevation yet the smallest lake

Hemlock

Characteristics: No motorized craft allowed on this pristine reservoir
Meaning: Only lake named by white man; it refers to the Native American word Onehda
