Attractions in the Finger Lakes
In and around the 11 Finger Lakes, from Syracuse and Binghamton to Rochester, Corning and Ithaca, there is something for everyone with plenty of museums, art galleries, musical performances and trendy places to shop and dine. Recreational opportunities seem limitless. There are plenty of boating and water sports, hiking, skiing, biking —popular trails run around the lakes —and festivals. And there are amusement parks, waterfalls and spectacular natural features with waterfalls, gorges and shale cliffs. The Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca; the outdoor stage in Syracuse’s Clinton Square, an exciting venue for a variety of outdoor performances; and Delavan Center, a dynamic new art gallery in Syracuse which showcases the work of more than 60 regional artists all provide a rich menu of things to do and see. In Rochester, the Memorial Art Gallery contains an enormous collections of art work spanning five thousand years and The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center in Auburn features six major shows a year. There are art and science museums and others like the New York Museum of Transportation in Rochester and estate museums which give you a sense of what life was like in another era such as the Museums of the Landmark Society and the George Eastman House in Rochester as well as the Granger Homestead and Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in Canandaigua. The Finger Lakes offers a wide range of theater styles from summer stock to year-round Shakespearean dramas and experimental productions. In Ithaca The Hangar Theatre has been in operation since 1975 and continues to produce five main-stage productions each season and the Ithaca College Theatre presents drama, comedy, musicals, opera, and dance performances at the George R. Hoerner and Richard M. Clark theaters from September to May while The School of Music features concerts throughout the year. For its size, Auburn is really big into the performing arts. Take the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. It produces five annual professional musicals in a building that formerly housed a fabulous carousel and the Auburn Players Community Theater stages four productions a year. In Rochester the Geva Theatre Center a professional regional theater in Rochester, produces comedies, musicals, and world premieres. And in Cortland, there is the Cortland Repertory Theatre where professionals have been performing comedies and musicals for more than 35 years
